Our Health and Safety Commitment

Our objectives are to prevent accidents, reduce risks to an acceptable level and continually improve our safety practices. We seek to identify hazards before work begins and manage them through careful planning, training and supervision.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Gardeners Selsdon holds overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. This includes ensuring that appropriate resources, equipment and training are provided so that work can be carried out safely and efficiently.

Suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for all services, including lawn care, planting, hedge cutting, tree and shrub pruning, clearance work and the use of powered machinery. Control measures identified in those assessments will be put in place and monitored.

All tools, machinery and vehicles used in our gardening operations are properly maintained, inspected and, where appropriate, tested in line with manufacturer guidance and applicable regulations.

Employees receive clear instructions and supervision, with particular attention paid to new starters, young workers and anyone carrying out unfamiliar tasks.

This policy and associated procedures are reviewed periodically and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance and working practices.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee of Gardeners Selsdon has a duty to safeguard their own health and safety and that of those who may be affected by their actions. We expect all team members to cooperate fully with this policy and adhere to the safety rules and procedures relevant to their work.

Employees must:

Use all tools, machinery and substances in accordance with training and instructions and never intentionally misuse equipment or remove safety devices.

Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment provided, such as gloves, safety footwear, high visibility clothing, eye and hearing protection, and respiratory protection when required.

Report accidents, near misses and hazardous conditions without delay so that corrective action can be taken and lessons learned.

Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that may impair safe performance of their duties.

Clients and Public Safety

We plan and conduct our gardening work in a way that minimises risks to clients, neighbours and the general public. This includes careful scheduling of activities, use of barriers and warning signs where appropriate, and maintaining tidy, orderly work areas.

Access routes, driveways and pathways will be kept as clear as reasonably practicable during gardening operations. Where temporary restrictions are necessary, we will communicate this clearly and reinstate safe access as soon as possible.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before undertaking new or higher risk activities, Gardeners Selsdon will complete a risk assessment to identify potential hazards such as slips and trips, manual handling, working at height, noise, vibration, flying debris and contact with chemicals or biological agents.

From these assessments we develop safe systems of work that may include designating exclusion zones, planning work sequences, using mechanical aids, selecting safer tools or methods, and ensuring that only competent personnel undertake specialist tasks such as tree work or the operation of certain powered equipment.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles

We recognise the importance of safe use of mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, hedge cutters and other powered tools widely used in gardening. Only trained and authorised employees are permitted to operate high risk machinery. Pre use checks are carried out and any defects are reported immediately and rectified before further use.

Where vehicles are used for transport of staff, materials and green waste, drivers must hold the appropriate licence and follow safe driving practices. Loads must be secured and vehicles must not be overloaded.

Chemicals and Substances

Where gardening work requires the use of chemicals such as fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or cleaning agents, Gardeners Selsdon will ensure that products are selected, stored, handled and applied in line with safety data sheets and relevant regulations.

Only trained personnel are permitted to use such substances. Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided and used. Measures are taken to protect clients, members of the public, pets, wildlife and the wider environment, including careful application and correct disposal of any residues or containers.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Many gardening activities involve lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. We aim to reduce manual handling risks by using trolleys, wheelbarrows and other aids wherever practicable, and by planning work to minimise unnecessary handling of heavy items such as soil, paving or plant stock.

Employees are trained in safe lifting techniques and encouraged to work at a sensible pace, taking breaks as needed to avoid fatigue and strain injuries.

Working in Outdoor Environments

Our teams frequently work outdoors and are exposed to weather conditions, uneven terrain, vegetation and wildlife. We take reasonable steps to manage these risks by planning for appropriate clothing, hydration and sun protection, and by assessing sites for potential hazards such as unstable ground, hidden obstacles or harmful plants.

Where work involves noise exposure, vibrating tools or potentially hazardous environments, we implement additional control measures and provide the necessary protective equipment.

Training, Information and Supervision
